Eight women, veiled and dressed in black, unexpected and uninvited, bringing performance art to the hallowed halls of SFMOMA and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. For artist Marsha Klein, staging her original walking art piece was the culmination of a series of performances 10 years in the making. The concept for “Abandoned Art – An Unexpected Performance Piece” originated over a decade ago. Faced with the frustration involved in the search for mainstream exposure for her artwork, Klein said, “It seemed to me that if one couldn’t get ‘decent’ exposure, then ‘indecent’ exposure would be the alternative.” This … Continue reading

As a small symbol of remembrance, the poppy has made a big difference for veterans in need. In 1923, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) had its first national campaign for the annual distribution of poppies, which are assembled by disabled or hospitalized veterans. Locally, VFW Bear Flag Post 1943 and its Ladies Auxiliary will be part of the annual campaign, distributing Buddy Poppies at Sonoma locations on May 25 and 25. According to Post Commander Dan Parker, all donations will directly benefit disabled and needy veterans and the widows and orphans of deceased veterans. The Sonoma post has helped … Continue reading

If and when it builds a proposed downtown Sonoma hotel, Kenwood Investments will hire local residents to staff the property and pay them according to the city’s Living Wage Ordinance, to include healthcare benefits. The agreement with the North Bay Labor Council is a first for Sonoma, and one of only two countywide, said ownership principal Darius Anderson.
(By George McKale) When Selma Blanusa was remodeling the old barn on her rural Seventh Street property, she noticed something different on the interior walls, namely paper. Along with her contractor, Chris Grippi, she began to unravel other peculiarities regarding the barn’s construction, eventually determining that it was once a home and later converted into a barn. Selma had collected a number of ancient wine bottle bases, a variety of iron thing-a ma-jigs, ceramics and square nails near the old 25 by 25 foot square home. The conclusion: why not conduct an archaeological excavation to see what other little treasures … Continue reading

A beautiful city that goes back to the Roman province of Pannonia 2,000 years ago, Budapest is a full of parks, 19th Century buildings, and castles looking down on the Danube River. “I always travel in costume as the famous Hungarian Count Agoston Haraszthy; it makes for interesting encounters.
