Does it feel any different? In years past, this was the week to gear up for the Sonoma Jazz Plus Festival. After last year’s reported $300,000 loss, organizers “postponed” the annual event after an appeal for community donations fell flat. So, music lovers, Aspen-based event staffers, volunteers, Sheryl Crow, we all have next weekend free. Enjoy This was the event that received tens of thousands of fee waivers and concessions from the city of Sonoma over the years, all in the name of promoting the town and filling up the hotels and restaurants. It will be interesting to see if … Continue reading

The Adversary’s sound is a compelling bend of folk, rock, electronica, trip-hop and even a little gypsy. Their result is a distinctive and engaging sound, both highly danceable and beautifully atmospheric. Special guest opener, local favorite Tony Gibson.

Long-time educator David Donnelley will be honored as Teacher of the Year at a celebration on Friday, May 18 starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Temple Lodge at 669 Broadway. Donnelley has been a teacher for 28 years, the last 19 of them in Sonoma. Having taught most every subject, he currently teaches College Prep and Honors Economics at Sonoma Valley High School. Of the honor, Donnelley humbly declined to take credit saying that when senior students arrive in his classroom, they’ve already been prepared by the best of the Sonoma Valley Unified School District’s teachers, making his job all … Continue reading

Seen from the escort helicopter hovering over Broadway, nearly 2,000 bicyclists mass for the start of the Echelon Sonoma Gran Fondo, the fundraising bike race that made its Sonoma debut on May 12. The rides of 11, 50 and 75 miles were followed by a food and music festival on the Plaza. “It was an off-the-charts success,” said event producer Hunter Zeising. “We love the town and want to come back. This could really become a signature event.” Among the top fundraising teams were Sweetwater Spectrum, with $4,486 in pledges, Sonoma Valley Hospital Foundation ($2,475) and Pets Lifeline ($2,180).

In a world prone to pessimism, even among those endeavoring to change it, the documentary “Transition 2.0” shares stories of hope, ingenuity and a kid growing lettuce on a vacant lot. Sharing their “engaged optimism,” Director Emma Goude shows ordinary people doing extraordinary things. The new film will be presented by Transition Sonoma Valley, the local chapter of the worldwide Transition social movement, on Thursday, May 17, at the Sonoma Valley Grange. The 7 p.m. screening is free. The film, far brighter than its gloomy 2009 predecessor “Transition 1.0,” documents innovation and success. Communities printing their own money, growing food … Continue reading
