Ben there, done that

UnknownThe Transcendence Theatre Company presents the one night concert event “Steppin’ Out with Ben Vereen” on Saturday, August 9 in Jack London State Historic Park. The 7:30 p.m. show highlights Vereen’s unique artistry, combining a tribute to Broadway, Frank Sinatra and a very special tribute to Sammy Davis Jr. with songs such as “Defying Gravity,” “Mr. Bojangles” and “Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries,”

The perfomance will take place in the majestic open-air winery ruins, the home of the company’s “Broadway Under The Stars” concerts.

New York Times calls Vereen “an old-school song and dance man who never lets up. He wins you over with his sheer energy, good will and showbiz know-how.”

On Broadway, Ben Vereen has appeared in “Wicked,” “Fosse,” “I’m Not Rappaport,” “Hair,” “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Pippin,” “Jelly’s Last Jam” and “A Christmas Carol.” His role in “Pippin” garnered him both the prestigious Tony Award and Drama Desk Award for Best Actor in a Musical.

“We are thrilled beyond belief to share the magic of Ben Vereen with our audiences,” says TTC Artistic Director Amy Miller. “He is a legendary and inspiring force of nature.”

The evening will begin with pre-show picnicking on the great lawn of the park starting at 5 p.m. with food and wine available for purchase). The performance begins at 7:30 p.m.
