Learning the ropes

A July 12 BBQ will benefit the Hanna Boys Center’s Ag Program, which provides practical, hands-on agricultural education to students. The event features a cocktail reception, Tri-tip or chicken dinner, and silent and lives auctions.

The Ag program, led by Agricultural Specialist Dave Redden, is an integral part of the Hanna High School curriculum and fosters community service opportunities and expands employment prospects. Most of the students come from urban neighborhoods and have limited, if any, experience or knowledge about agriculture.

The largest focus of the program is on breeding sheep, market sheep and steers, and competitive livestock judging. Participants learn and get involved with the annual Sonoma County Fair and Livestock Auction. The event is from 6 to 10 p.m. $50. Tables of eight available. Hanna Boys Center Auditorium, 17000 Arnold Drive. Hannacenter.org.
