Get involved: Open house of volunteer opportunities

Sonoma Valley’s extensive network of non-profit organizations is banding together to present Volunteer Sonoma!, an April 16 showcase of groups seeking community members who want to make a difference and enhance their own lives through volunteer work.

Volunteer Sonoma! will be held at the Sonoma Veterans Building on Wednesday, April 16 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. There is no charge to attend, and the first 100 attendees will be offered a free box lunch donated by Whole Foods, Sonoma.

Twenty local non-profit organizations will host tables and have representatives on-hand to discuss volunteer opportunities. Attendees are welcome to sign up that day.

The event, a collaborative project of the Sonoma Valley Executive Director Roundtable, will benefit both the community and the Valley non-profits. This established group of leaders has been meeting monthly for nearly 14 years.

“All of our organizations need and appreciate active, engaged volunteers,” said Pets Lifeline Executive Director Nancy King. “This event will allow the community to see the wide array of opportunities available and speak directly with representatives from all of the organizations.”

A recent informal survey of local non-profit organizations, conducted by the group, confirms that volunteering has a significant impact on all sectors of the community. This survey estimated the total number of volunteer hours annually is ¬¬119,042 completed by 2,896 volunteers. Despite this impressive number, the demand for volunteer support in the Valley remains strong.

Whole Foods – Sonoma, Rabo Bank, The Community Foundation of Sonoma Valley and the Sonoma Valley Sun are founding sponsors of the event. Sonoma Valley Rotary and Kiwanis members are attending the event in lieu of their regular weekly meetings.
