The Sonoma Stompers baseball club needs a few more players, and final approval on making Arnold Field its home, for its inaugural season to begin in June.
Owned and operated by Redwood Sports and Entertainment, LLC, the Stompers will compete in the Pacific Association of Professional Baseball Clubs. Rounding out the six-team league are The San Rafael Pacifics, BayCal Lumberjacks, Vallejo Admirals, Na Koa Ikaika of Maui and the Hawaii Stars.
The teams are not affiliated with major league organizations. The caliber of play will be consistent with Class A and Class AA minor-league baseball, according to Hunter Horenstein, the assistant general manager.
Tickets will be no higher than $10, Horenstein said.
The team plans to sub-lease Arnold Field, which is operated by the Sonoma County parks department. Before the county moves ahead with the deal, it asked the team to get the approval of the Sonoma City Council.
The initial presentation was met with enthusiasm. The final vote will come March 17.
“We’re very hopeful,” Horenstein said. Meanwhile, the team is moving ahead with filling out its roster.
The Stompers will hold an open tryout on March 15 at 8 a.m. at Peterson Field, 175 First Street West, in Sonoma. The session was rescheduled from March 1 because of inclement weather.
Sonoma Stompers manager Casey Dill, and San Rafael Pacifics manager Dan DiPace, will conduct the tryout. Representatives from the other Pacific Association teams will be in attendance.
Pre-registration cost is $100 and day-of is $150. All players are welcome, Horenstein said, but the team recommends that those players wishing to tryout have exhausted amateur eligibility and have previous pro or college experience. Registrations for the original March 1 date will be honored.
To register, or to find out more, please contact Tristan Barbieri in the Pacifics front office at 415.485.1563. Pre-registration will end on Friday, March 14, at 4 p.m.
