Rare local gig for sax great Hamilton

In the view of many tenor saxophonists, wrote critic Leonard Feather, it was Scott Hamilton who, arriving on the New York scene in 1976, saved their instrument from imminent death-by-tonal-torture. “Then 22, he reminded us of the horn’s inherent beauty at a time when honking and squeaking were rapidly becoming the disorder of the day.”

Four decades later, the boy wonder is an elder statesman for the robust, urbane kind of swing that helped revitalize and advance mainstream acoustic jazz. In a rare West Coast appearance, the jazz great, backed by the Larry Vukovich Trio, plays the Sonoma Valley Woman’s Club
 on Friday, February 21 at 7:30 p.m. Presented by the Sonoma Valley Jazz Society [2], $20-$30 at Sonomavalleyjazzsociety.com.
