Four local spots for Coastal Cleanup Day

No need to drive to the beach to be part of California Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday, September 21 – there are four Sonoma Valley locations where volunteers can be part of the statewide initiative.
Volunteers are invited to join the Sonoma Ecology Center in a creek cleanup from 9 a.m. to noon at: Maxwell Farms Regional Park; Larson Regional Park; Fryer Creek; and Nathanson Creek Preserve.
California’s coast and waterways have historically been dumping grounds and areas of accumulation for trash and debris. Although the event is called the “Coastal” Cleanup , it was expanded to include inland waterways for important reasons: studies have shown that 80 percent of ocean debris comes from inland sources such as creeks and rivers. This debris can be harmful to marine wildlife, damage our state’s economy, and even pose human health hazards.
The outing is a great event for families, students, service groups, and neighbors to join together, take care of the fragile wetland and marine environments, show community support for our shared natural resources and, of course, have fun in the process.
Coffee and snacks will be provided in the morning with light lunches provided starting at noon at these local sites:
• Sonoma Creek: Meet at Maxwell Farms Regional Park at the Boys and Girls Club, 100 Verano Avenue.
• Larson Regional Park: Meet at picnic tables near new Community Garden site.
• Nathanson Creek Preserve: Meet at the Native Plant Demonstration Garden, corner of MacArthur and Second Street East.
• Fryer Creek: Meet at the intersection of Second Street West and Bettencourt Street.
Participants may get wet and dirty, so dress accordingly. Volunteers should bring layered comfortable clothing, sunscreen and a water bottle, plus gloves and buckets to remove trash. Children must be accompanied by an adult. For questions about clean-up sites or to RSVP for a group of 10 or more, please contact Trace McKellips at 996-0712 x126 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
