A recovering Midwesterner, he moved to San Francisco about 20 years ago and quit drinking, comedian Joe Kocek is the class clown who read too much. “Republicans want a smaller government,” he says of one political issue, “small enough to fit into a woman’s vagina.” On another, he figures, “the people who take guns to school are usually unemployed and lack social skills. Instead of registering guns, why don’t we register x-boxes?”
If there’s a message in his act, he says, “it’s that sarcasm, irony and wit can combat ignorance, stupidity and the boring.” Voted best comic in the 2011 SF Weekly Readers Poll and a runner-up San Francisco comedy competition, Kocek also appeared in NBC’s “Last Comic Standing.”
Catch him in Sonoma at Murphy’s Irish Pub on Friday, July 26 at 9 p.m. and Saturday, July 27 at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Featuring Kate Willett and Johnny Taylor, the shows are hosted by Torio Van Grol. $20 advance, $25 at the door. Ticket includes one beer. Sonomapub.com. 464 First St. E.
