In the 1940s and ’50s, there was no hotter spot for blues and jazz than West Oakland. Anchored by Slim Jenkins Place, where the likes of Louis Jordan, Charles Brown, Duke Ellington and Sarah Vaughan would congregate, Seventh Street was a thriving, happening scene.
Today, little trace remains save for a legacy of the Oakland sound kept alive by the Bay Area Blues Society Caravan of Allstars. The powerhouse big band, complete with ‘Sweet Meat Horn Section,’ serves up its tasty chops on Saturday, June 8, 9 p.m. No cover. El Verano Inn. 705 Laurel.
