Urban artwork

A group of teenagers with X-Acto blades and spray paint descended on ARTescape recently, and their parents and teachers couldn’t be more thrilled. Battling heavy gusts of wind, and maybe a few stereotypes, the teens stayed focused for three hours as they cut out their intricate, layered designs and experimented with color during a class titled “Urban Art and Stenciling.”

[1]ARTescape [2], a non-profit extension of The Arts Guild of Sonoma, is becoming a hub for local artists and students of all ages to convene and create.

The mission is to offer affordable and accessible enrichment opportunities in the visual arts to the diverse population of the Sonoma Valley community.

“These young artists are uniquely poised to push boundaries, develop skills, and make discoveries, but the scarcity of arts in the schools leaves a void,” said Sarah Parker about the free classes.

In response, a total of seven free workshops for teens will be offered at ARTescape, located at 17474-A, Sonoma Highway. The next free class, on April 7, covers urban lettering and will explore comic-book illustration with instructor Melissa Byrne. Classes are limited to 10 students, so sign-up in advance is required.

Mentorship, portfolio development, and the opportunity to explore the reality of a career in the arts are all also available to teens and young artists through ARTescape, Parker said.
