Members of the Prestwood School Student Council show a check for $513.47, money raised by students in a school-wide drive to aid Red Cross relief efforts for victims of Hurricane Sandy. Fifth-grade student council leaders, along with teacher representative Sal Pagano, organized the two-week effort, which included recycling bottles and cans, and a classroom “spare change” drive, through Nov. 30.
The majority of the funds raised came from pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters, Pagano said, “which exemplifies how a small effort by many people can have a huge impact.” Added Student Council Members Anna Taggesel and Sabrina Baker, “We think it’s great because students can interact with people across the country and it helps people in need.” To date, Red Cross has served more than 6 million meals and snacks and distributed more than two million relief items, such as clean-up kits and hygiene kits. Prestwood students want to remind the public that financial donations can still be made at Redcross.org/hurricane-sandy.
