Furlough, not Vacation Days

To the Citizens of Sonoma Valley,
As a long-time teacher in the Valley and current president of the Valley of the Moon Teachers Association, I would like to give a huge “Thank you!” to those who voted in our recent election to support public education and help pass Proposition 30. The end result from the money that Proposition 30 will generate for schools and colleges will hopefully mean a return to the kind of school year that does not include what our local public schools are facing in 2012-2013 – cuts in teaching and support positions, a dramatic reduction in custodial services and eight furlough days.
Monday, November 19 and Tuesday, November 20 were not school holidays. They were work furlough days. Sonoma Valley Unified School District employees were not working and, therefore, were not paid. Our students lost two days of important classroom instruction. Let’s hope that with the passage of Proposition 30 and other important legislation to protect school funding, furlough days become a thing of the past and not our future.
