Howie Ehret, who served 30 years in the U.S. Navy before retiring to Sonoma in 1992, passed away at age 70 in December.

An informal community barbecue in the style of Sonoma’s annual Ox Roast, the Sonoma tradition that he coordinated for many years, will honor the life of civic leader and community volunteer Howie Ehret.

Commemorative activities will take place at the Sonoma Community Center on January 21 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The celebration will include a series of formal presentations and speakers including  members of Ehret’s family and friends, to begin at 11 a.m. in Andrews Hall. It concludes with a formal salute by a military honor guard.

After the formal presentations, an Ox Roast-style BBQ will begin and will include donations of food, beverages and volunteer time from Rotary of Sonoma Valley and Sonoma Community Center. Community members and businesses have made generous donations to the BBQ, including Sam Morphy of The Red Grape, Ron Larson, Gary Edwards of Carneros Caves, Lagunitas Brewery and Cline Cellars. Vegetarian food selections will be available, as will non-alcoholic beverages.

The Ehret family has put together displays of Howie’s photos and memorablia, which will be on display during the celebration. Family members are looking for additional photos of Howie to include in the displays, and ask that digital copies be emailed to Toni Castrone at cc-toni@vom.com by Friday, Jan. 20.

Following the formal presentations, guests are invited on stage to share their memories of Howie in a casual open-microphone format.

In lieu of flowers, and in memory of Howie’s tireless volunteer work, the Ehret family has asked for donations to be made to Sonoma Community Center, Rotary of Sonoma Valley, or The Holly Ehret Memorial Leadership Foundation. Information about these organizations and Howie Ehret’s Celebration of Life is available by calling 938-4626 x 1.

Sonoma Community Center is located at 276 E. Napa St. Sonoma.

Overflow parking will be available behind the Community Center in the Trinity Episcopal parking lot.
