Friday’s contest: The Wolves come in winners of three of their first four in their inaugural varsity season. Their only loss is a 38-33 defeat at the hands of Chavez High School of Stockton. The Wolves have wins over Pacheco (49-18), Elsie Allen (72-0), and last week over Piedmont (42-15). This is the first varsity season for the Wolves after having a JV squad last year.
Starting quarterback Justin Corpus doesn’t throw often, only 27 attempts through the first two games, but he’s been effective, tossing for seven touchdowns against only one interception.
Corpus has proven to be an effective runner, scampering for 115 yards on 18 carries, but the ground attack is led by Robert Wilkes who has picked up 334 yards (14.52 yards per carry) and Jomon Dotson (211 yards on 18 carries).
Corpus’ favorite targets are Chris Seisay (8 receptions, 216 yards and four touchdowns) and Malik Beachum (8 receptions, 226 yards, three touchdowns). The Dragons fell to 1-1 on the season last week after squandering a 10-0 halftime lead over Tamalpais on the road. Turnovers and penalties ultimately led to defeat as the Hawks pushed in a pair of touchdowns in the second half. The Dragons may look to spread the ball around in the passing game as Morgan connected with Dustin Sloane and Keenan Tuohy for completions in the second half last week after Tamalpais put an extra defender in the area of receiver Chris Swanson.
Fun Facts: Dragons starting quarterback Morgan’s grandfather Von was a star athlete at Vallejo High School and Abilene Christian. He was selected three picks after the legendary Johnny Unitas in the 9th round of the 1955 NFL draft. American Canyon scored on the first play from scrimmage on their new filed against Elsie Allen. American Canyon is averaging 51.3 points per game through four games.
