Leading 10-0 at halftime the Sonoma Dragons looked headed for an easy victory Saturday afternoon at Tamalpais High School.
However, a pair of turnovers and the home Hawks getting their running game going led to a 14-10 loss for the Dragons (1-1) who now look to rebound when they take on American Canyon (3-1) at home tomorrow night at Arnold Field.
The Dragons took advantage of a short Tamalpias punt to go 38 yards on their opening possession, capped on a two-yard run by sophomore Dan Deely to take a 6-0 lead with only five minutes run off the clock.
Senior Chris Swanson added the extra point and the Dragons led 7-0.
After the teams traded scoreless possessions, Swanson kicked a 23-yard filed goal with five minutes to go in the first half for a 10-0 lead. The Dragons defense stalled all Hawks scoring threats in the first half, including Swanson’s block of a late field goal try right before halftime to keep the score at 10-0.
Tamalpais remained committed to the run throughout the contest, rushing the ball 41 times, and picked up 76 of their 125 yards on the ground in the final quarter.
Tam took advantage of good field position following an interception to setup their first score, which came midway through the third quarter to cut Sonoma’s lead to 10-7.
Following a Sonoma punt Deely intercepted a pass to stall the next Hawks drive and the third quarter ended with the Dragons up by three.
Tam drove 64 yards in just seven plays on the first possession of the fourth quarter to take the lead 14-7. The last six plays of the drive were rushing plays.
The Dragons seemingly caught a break when a roughing the passer call on fourth-and-20 provided an automatic first down near midfield, but Sonoma couldn’t take advantage of the penalty and eventually turned the ball over on downs in the waning minutes.
