Friday night’s contest: The Dragons and Trojans have squared off the last two seasons and the results have been a pair of highly entertaining games won by the visitor each time. Last year the Dragons lone victory came against the Trojans in the oppressive heat as temperatures on the Terra Linda Field Turf neared 105 degrees.
Last season’s contest was filled with turnovers by both teams, and at one point featured three changes of possession in five plays.
While the Dragons had a bye last week, the Trojans pounded Hayward’s Mt. Eden High School 46-0 as coach Tim Bosque looks to build on a disappointing 4-6 2010 campaign.
On defense the Dragons linebacking corps looks to be solid with the return of Eric Clouse and Josh Jones. The defensive secondary returns Sam Morgan and Chris Swanson and defensive end Jonathan Amandoli looks to have a breakout season.
On offense the Dragons will look to sophomores Matt Robinson and Dan Deely to help put a charge into a group that had trouble generating points in SCL play last season. Morgan had his best game quarterbacking last year against the Trojans, serving as a double threat by passing for a score and running one in himself.
On paper the Trojans seemed to lose a majority of their skill position players to graduation. Top players returning include TE Cole Charlton (6-4, 225), RB Jack Cullen (5-10, 165) and DT Jake Kaillahi (6-0, 255).
Last week the Trojans held Mt. Eden to only 48 yards of total offense and picked off three passes while rolling up 154 yards on the ground to go with another 89 through the air. Cullen had a pick and rushed for 72 yards on just seven carries. Quarterback Jake Toll-McKillop saw his first game action on offense since being knocked out with a thumb injury in last year’s loss to Sonoma, and responded well, throwing for two first-half scores.
Fun Facts: Last season (2010) every team with the exception of Sonoma qualified for the NCS playoffs. Analy’s returning quarterback Jake Zanutto threw for 380 yards in his team’s win last week. Cardinal Newman defeated Concord to retain it #4 ranking in the Bay Area according to the SF Chronicle. Windsor alum Brandyn Reed was on the receiving end of the winning score Saturday when Sacramento State upset Oregon State. Casa Grande fell out of the Chronicle’s top 25 following at 47-37 loss to Ukiah. In the game Ukiah quarterback Trevor Taylor passed for deven touchdowns and over 400 yards.
