What a great community

Rick Wynne | Rotary Club of Sonoma Valley

Thanks to all of you who helped make the Rotary Club of Sonoma Valley’s 20th annual Louis Minelli Memorial Golf Tournament and Festa Sonoma Celebration a huge success. We raised more money for Sonoma Valley programs and organizations’ projects than ever before.
With all the fundraisers that go on this time of year, this kind of support is remarkable. It is further testament to the generosity of our community. We all know that Sonoma is like no other place, and that there is no place we would rather be. The way our community turns out to support cause after cause, program after program, organization after organization, event after event is one of the most compelling reasons we love living here.

Rotary has a Four-Way Test of things we think, do and say. I think our community as a whole lives this test. See if you agree: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? I don’t think there is any question about it. There is a special feeling here that we are all one when it comes to making our little corner of the world the best for all our residents.

So many organizations work tirelessly to enrich the lives and opportunities of so many. That’s truth and fairness, which builds goodwill and better friendships from which we all benefit.
Speaking of friendships, all of us in Rotary would like to thank our sponsors in particular as well as everyone who bought a tee sign sponsorship, donated or bought an auction item, or contributed to the fund a need for scholarships.

I would also like to personally thank all my fellow Rotarians who worked for months to put the golf tournament and Festa Sonoma together, and who worked tirelessly to make it happen.

The Rotary motto is “service above self,” and events such as these bring that motto to life. We believe in having a good time, but we never forget our real purpose: to serve our local community and the larger community in need around the world.

The money raised last Friday will go to support specific projects and needs in such community organizations and programs as the Sonoma Community Center, Sonoma Valley Schools Garden Project, Operation Youth, SVHS Culinary Arts Program, Boys & Girls Club of Sonoma Valley, Sonoma Valley Mentoring Alliance, Summer School and After School Enrichment Programs and academic and vocational scholarships.

This is a great community. It is up to each of us to support it any way we can. Our event was a great example…let’s keep it going. I know we will!
