Boys basketball benefit a success

Playing to a near-capacity crowd and with top-flight talent on display, the fundraiser for the Sonoma Valley High School boys basketball program organized by alumnus Sal Chavez was a huge success.

The game, played July 30 at Pfeiffer Gym between the Pro-Am team Nor Cal and the Bay Area Matrix of the American Basketball Association’s California League, was thoroughly entertaining while accomplishing its goal of raising money for the SVHS hoops program.

Chavez, a 2004 graduate of SVHS who went on to play at Napa Valley College as well as numerous other professional and amateur basketball leagues organized the event as a way to supplement the basketball program’s finances and ensure that looming budget cuts did not slice into the opportunities afforded the young basketball players in the Sonoma Valley.

Chavez cited the ability to provide and entertaining product for families to watch while supporting the Fighting Dragons program as the reasons behind the challenge of organizing such a large-scale event.

With a game that entertained the crowd with long-distance shooting, crisp passing and high-flying slam dunks no one was disappointed.
