Sonoma native Brett Wallace, in only his first full major league season, is being strongly considered as the Houston Astros representative in the major league baseball All-Star game to be played July 12th at Chase Field in Arizona.
Wallace, who attended Justin Siena High School and earned two-time Pac-10 Player of the Year honors at Arizona State, was amongst the National League’s top-10 hitters as of June 14th.
Wallace raised his average to .311 Monday night with a pair of doubles in Houston to lead the Astros past the Atlanta Braves 8-3. Wallace knocked in his 20th run of the season in the win and boasts a .387 on-base percentage through the team’s first 67 games.
With each major league team guaranteed at least on player representative for the All-Star game, Wallace’s biggest competition for the Astros spot is right fielder Hunter Pence. Pence had a four-hit game Monday night to raise his average to .325 and is in the middle of a 23-game hitting streak.
ESPN analyst Barry Larkin identified Wallace as “another young player making his mark on the game,” following Monday night’s game.
Wallace and the Astros come to ATT Park to face the Giants August 19-21.
