The Sonoma Dragons drew a number-four seed at the North Coast Section baseball meeting Sunday and the result was a road game against Eureka Tuesday in the opening round of the 2011 playoffs.
The Dragons game with the Loggers takes place on the road due to the fact that Eureka (16-8, # 13 seed) was the champion of its league (Humboldt Del Norte Big 5) and Sonoma finished in third-place in the SCL behind co-champs Petaluma and Casa Grande.
The Dragons had a chance to tie for the top spot in the SCL, but dropped their final regular season game 5-4 to Petaluma. The Trojans rallied to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for the walk-off win. The Dragons finished 15-8 overall and 9-3 in the SCL.
Sonoma defeated Eureka on Apr. 2 by a score of 3-2. However, that game came as part of a three-game, two-day road trip that the Loggers embarked on, playing Mt. Diablo, Sonoma and Analy all within 24 hours.
Against Petaluma the Dragons scored all of their runs in the third inning and led 4-2 heading into the sixth inning.
The Dragon picked up eight hits in the loss, led by senior Kevin Deely and junior Chandler Kelley’s two hits, including a double by Deely. Also notching hits for Sonoma were Chris Swanson, Sam Morgan, Jonah Son and Brennan Cole.
Cole, who allowed only six hits, took the loss.
The season-ending SCL tournament scheduled for last week was cancelled due to rain and scheduling conflicts.
