Farmers Market menu looks healthy, yummy

The season opens May 3 on the Plaza with 63 vendors of certified produce, prepared foods, arts and crafts, and entertainers. Booths will occupy the both lanes of the City Hall horseshoe, and wrap around the north side (don’t say “back”) of the building.
Emily Fitzgerald, board vice president for The Valley of the Moon Certified Farmers Market, said vendors were approved and assigned spaces based on a point scale that rewarded local, small, independent businesses.
Only 15 applicants were denied, she said.
The goal of having healthier options for to-go food was met, Fitzgerald said. Many of the new prepared foods, such as pizza and pasta, will use ingredients sourced from farmers at the market.
“They end up supporting each other,” she said.
The VMCFM, managing the market independently for the first time, ended an old rule dictating what each vendor could and could not sell. For 2011, if a vendor is licensed to sell something, they can, regardless of what other vendors offer.
“There will be more freedom to be an entrepreneur,” Fitzgerald said. “Vendors will have to find their niche.”
Fitzgerald confirmed that her group will bid on the contact to manage the Friday morning market, which takes place on the Depot Park parking lot of First Street West. The county, which owns the property, has issued its first-ever Request for Proposals to hear ideas from prospective operators for the weekly market.
A mandatory meeting for all RFP participants will be held Friday, April 15, at 2 p.m. at the Sonoma Valley Veterans Memorial Building. The deadline to apply is May 1.
