Wings and Wheels at Sonoma Skypark

Classic cars and airplanes stand for inspection at Sonoma Skypark

Museum-quality airplanes and vintage automobiles will be on display on Saturday, October 9, at Sonoma Skypark Airport from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Classic biplanes from the 1920’s and gleaming polished aluminum beauties from the 1930’s will transport visitors back into the Golden Age of barnstormers and aerial circuses. Local pilots will have their beautifully restored classic and antique aircraft out on the line, joined by vintage automobiles from the Ford Model A and Devil’s Darlings car clubs.

The Wings and Wheels show benefits Air Explorer Post 1268.

The day is free and will be full of activities for all ages. There will be an old-fashioned hayride, complementary hamburger and hot dogs, a ham radio station from The Valley of the Moon Amateur Radio Club and a display of radio controlled airplanes.

The local Air Explorer Post will be selling ice cream and soft drinks and answering questions about their aviation youth program for ages 14 through 20.

Also on hand will be a squad of radio-controlled airplanes, displayed by the local RC aircraft club. Members will explain how to build and fly the scale models, many of which are as expertly detailed as the full-sized aircraft parked along the runway.

The local Experimental Airplane Association chapter will have information on building your own airplane. New pilot’s license categories have made flying more accessible and economical, and a number of light aircraft designs are available that can be built with basic skills and tools.

The EAA also gives free airplane rides to young boys and girls ages 6 through 17. Sonoma Skypark pilots have flown over two thousand Young Eagles in just over ten years of the program operation. Information about getting a Young Eagles flight will be available at the EAA club table.
Sonoma Skypark is located at 21870 Eighth St. E.
