SDC troupe stages ‘Mary Poppins’

The Performing Arts Company at Sonoma Developmental Center, in its annual stage production starring SDC employees and residents, will perform “Adventures with Mary Poppins” in a two-weekend run starting September 22.

“We’re really looking forward to again putting on a great show for all the folks that reside at Sonoma Developmental Center,” said Jim Tallent, committee chair and director of the play. “Hopefully, they’ll enjoy everything we do.”

The company was founded in 2005 as a way to involve the individuals who live at the Center in a meaningful theatrical experience. Anyone living at the facility is welcome to audition and is guaranteed a part in the play. The cast is comprised of approximately 30-40 singers, dancers, actors and musicians.

Open auditions began in early spring, with rehearsals held throughout the summer months. The hard work pays off with performances Sept. 22 and 23, 29 and 30, at 7 p.m. at the SDC Gymnasium.

Since the inaugural 2005 production, of “Grease,” shows have included “The Music Man” and “The Wizard of Oz.”

Volunteers are needed for this year’s show to assist backstage, with rehearsals, props, costumes, and more. Those interested in helping out should contact Becky Zyskowski at 938.6713.
