Martini Madness

At Friday night’s Martini Madness, competing bartenders used all manner of exotic ingredients — fruits, vegetables, sweets, savories, liqueurs and, gasp, even vodka — to concoct unique takes on the stately cocktail. The affair at a sold-out Saddles kicked off Olive Season, as guests sampled the best efforts of a dozen top mixologists. Voted Most Creative was the Lemon Meringue Pie Martini from Carneros Bistro, while honors for Best Use of the Olive – the preparation involved a blowtorch — went to Saddles. The overall winner, from Sonoma Meritage and dubbed the Dirty Cougar, featured grapefruit and elderflower liquor.
